It is also contested in the invisible electromagnetic spectrum.

Modern warfare is increasingly shaped by the ability of one to control or dominate the electromagnetic spectrum. States and armed forces now rely on electronic systems for radars, military communications, surveillance, and command-and-control systems to maintain operational effectiveness. Recent US Army’s integration of three Electronic Warfare (EW) technologies signals this changing battlefield and offers important lessons for the future of Pakistan’s EW capabilities.

On 8th of October, 2026, the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s C5ISR Center published an announcement that they have successfully integrated three electronic warfare systems that can rapidly detect, analyze and disrupt hostile communications. This demonstration was conducted from August 5 to 8 at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland with soldiers from the 11th Cyber Battalion participating in the event. The integrated system combines: the Tactical Development Kit (TDK), Tactical Radio Frequency Application Chassis (TRAC), and Warped Alloy.

The significance of this integration lies in how the three technologies work together. The integration brings together the signal detection, artificial-intelligence or AI-assisted analysis and software-driven electronic effects. The key purpose of this integration is to shorten the chain between discovering hostile transmission, identifying how it works, selecting a countermeasure and delivering an electronic effect against it.

Each component has a distinct role in the process. TRAC is a ruggedized open-architecture platform that monitors the electromagnetic spectrum, supports mission planning, and delivers non-kinetic electronic effects. When TRAC detects a signal of interest, it can pass the information to TDK. The TDK is a deployed library of known adversary signals. It uses AI and machine learning (ML) to help analyze unfamiliar signals and identify their frequencies and waveforms. That information can then inform a response through Warped Alloy which is a software framework that generates radio-frequency effect at the communications-protocol level.

This is different from the older EW methods that primarily attempt to overpower hostile communications with electromagnetic energy. Instead, Warped Alloy is designed to interfere with the protocols governing how communications systems operate. The central lesson drawn from this development is that EW is evolving beyond individual equipment towards integrated systems that combine sensing, analysis, and electronic effects. This integration reflects US Army’s effort to adapt responses more rapidly as threats evolve. Overall, the goal is to reduce the time between detecting a transmission and delivering an appropriate electronic countermeasure. However, this integration is not evidence of finished, fully integrated system. The Army still plans further testing and refinement.

The US Army’s initiative provides an important lesson for Pakistan that future EW will depend on integration, adaptability and resilience rather than acquisition of equipment alone. Pakistan has publicly emphasized network-centric operations and multi-domain. Pakistan has also identified EW, cyber capabilities, space assets, and indigenous technological development as elements of its military modernization.

In February 2026, the Pakistan Air Force’s Exercise Golden Eagle highlighted AI-enabled operations and the integration of electromagnetic-spectrum activities with cyber, space and other military capabilities. This exercise also involved early warning platforms and control platforms. The exercise focused on AI-enabled, network-centric operations along with the integration of indigenous disruptive and smart technologies in the evolving regional security dynamics. The battlespace was shaped, by friendly forces, through the fusion of kinetic operations with cyber, space, electromagnetic spectrum operations. The exercise also validated Pakistan’s ability to conduct high-tempo operations in modern warfare.

Now, there is need to assess the requirements for Pakistan’s future EW. However, it cannot be concluded that Pakistan has relatively equal capabilities to that of the specific US systems. This technological shift emphasize on assessing the existing systems of Pakistan systems. The assessment includes: identification of electronic threats exchange of information, and support of coordinated decisions. Therefore, in future modernization, the integration between electronic systems, command networks, and surveillance platforms must be considered. Moreover, the development of indigenous technologies is equally important as the overreliance on external suppliers can create challenges.

The recent US’ Army’s integration of TRAC, TDK, and Warped Alloy signals the fundamental shift in EW capabilities. The most appropriate lesson, for Pakistan, is not a technological race. Instead, the lesson lies in its long-term attempt to improve integration of systems, domestic innovation of technologies, resilience in operations, and expertise in profession.

In future, EW will not only depend on the number of systems. Rather it will rely on who can integrate information, adapt to emerging threats, and maintain reliable decision-making under contested conditions. For Pakistan, it is important to acknowledge this broader shift in EW capabilities and prepare for the warfare of tomorrow accordingly.

Author: Muqaddas Akhtar, Research Intern, Center for International Strategic Studies, AJK.

Modern warfare is no longer fought solely in skies, on land, or at sea.
